Step-by-step procedure
- 01
Bathe and prepare a clean space
Bathe and put on freshly washed clothes, men in a dhoti-kurta or yellow clothing, women in a yellow or red saree. Sweep and mop the room where the puja will take place, and sprinkle Ganga-jal to purify. The setup should let you sit facing east or north.
- 02
Set up the chowki and kalash
Spread the red or yellow cloth over the chowki. Place the Satyanarayan idol or picture at the centre. Set the kalash to the right: fill it with water, place 5 or 7 mango leaves at the mouth, top with a coconut (husk intact), tie a red or yellow mauli around the kalash, and draw a swastika on its neck with roli.
- 03
Light the lamp and take sankalpa
Light a pure-ghee lamp and place it to the right of the deity, and an oil lamp to the left. Take a flower, a pinch of akshat, a little water, and a whole betel-nut in your hand and make your sankalpa: state your name, gotra (if known), your address, the date, and why you are performing this puja: say it in your mind or softly aloud. This sankalpa is what makes the puja bear fruit; do not skip it.
Mantra for this step
ॐ विष्णवे नमः।
Om Vishnave Namah.
Salutations to Lord Vishnu.
- 04
Ganesh and Navagraha puja
Every puja begins by inviting Ganesh so obstacles are cleared. Treat a whole betel-nut as Ganesh, apply roli, chandan, akshat and a flower on it, and chant "Om Gam Ganapataye Namah" 21 times. Then invoke the nine planets: place 9 grains or 9 betel-nuts in a small bowl to the right, and chant "Om Navagrahebhyo Namah" 3 times.
Mantra for this step
ॐ गं गणपतये नमः।
Om Gam Ganapataye Namah.
Salutations to Ganapati, remover of obstacles.
- 05
Invoke Satyanarayan and perform shodashopachar puja
With folded hands before the deity, invoke him saying "Om Shri Satyanarayanaya Namah." Then offer the sixteen upacharas in order: (1) seat, a flower, (2) padya, water for the feet, (3) arghya, water for the hands, (4) achamana, water for the mouth, (5) snana, bathe first with panchamrit, then with plain water, (6) vastra, a mauli or yellow thread, (7) yajnopavita, raw cotton thread, (8) chandan and roli, (9) akshat, (10) flowers and tulsi, (11) dhoop, (12) deep, (13) naivedya, the sinjhara prasad, (14) tambula, paan and supari, (15) dakshina: a coin, (16) aarti. Say "Om Shri Satyanarayanaya Namah" at each step.
Mantra for this step
ॐ श्री सत्यनारायणाय नमः।
Om Shri Satyanarayanaya Namah.
Salutations to Narayana, the embodiment of truth.
- 06
Read the Satyanarayan Katha
Read all five adhyayas (chapters) from the Gita Press Satyanarayan Katha book. This is the heart of the puja. Have everyone in the household sit and listen attentively. At the end of each chapter say "Om Shri Satyanarayanaya Namah". Chapter 1 is the Narada–Narayana dialogue, chapter 2 the story of the Brahmin Shatananda, chapter 3 the merchant Sadhu and his daughter Kalavati, chapter 4 their sea voyage, and chapter 5 the story of King Tungadhwaja. The puja is considered incomplete if all five chapters are not read.
- 07
Aarti and forgiveness prayer
Light camphor or a ghee flame and perform the aarti "Jai Lakshmi Ramana" (five clockwise rotations before the deity). Have everyone clap and sing along. After the aarti, fold your hands and say the kshama-prarthana: "Avahanam na janami na janami visarjanam, puja-vidhim na janami kshamasva parameshvara": meaning, Lord, I do not know the proper invocation, nor the proper closing, nor the proper procedure, please forgive me. This is the single most important closing, any error in the earlier steps is forgiven by this prayer.
- 08
Prasad distribution and shared meal
Offer the prepared sinjhara prasad to the deity first, then distribute: to the elders in the household first, then children, then guests. Tradition in many households holds that no one should leave the katha space without accepting prasad. Follow with a simple vegetarian meal shared together: onion, garlic, meat and alcohol are strictly avoided on the day of the puja.
Common mistakes
- Starting the puja without stating the sankalpa (why you are performing it). Without the sankalpa the puja is not considered fruitful.
- Offering the naivedya without a tulsi leaf. Tulsi is essential in any Vishnu worship, at least one tulsi leaf should sit on the prasad.
- Getting up, checking your phone or chatting during the katha reading. Listening to the katha is the main merit of the puja; leaving mid-way is considered inauspicious.
- Cooking the sinjhara prasad on high flame, the flour stays undercooked. Roast the flour on low heat until it turns golden brown.
- Skipping the kshama-prarthana. This single verse absolves all the unintentional errors made anywhere else in the puja.
Modern-home adaptations
- If space is tight in an apartment, a low stool or a chair with cloth spread over it serves as a chowki. This puja doesn't require a fire-pit or yagna vedi.
- A havan is not mandatory for this puja, dhoop and a ghee lamp alone are enough. Fire offerings are not required.
- If Ganga-jal is not available, clean drinking water is fine, dropping a few tulsi leaves and sankalping it as "ganga-jal-rupa" is an accepted substitution.
- If sinjhara is too time-intensive, panjiri, halwa or clean cut fruit is also acceptable as naivedya. Sinjhara is traditional, not mandatory.
