How to read the slots

  • Each slot shows its time and a Good, Neutral or Bad tag.
  • Day slots run from sunrise to sunset, night slots from sunset to the next sunrise.
  • By tradition a Good slot is picked for everyday tasks. For a big decision such as a wedding, choghadiya alone is not enough.

Common misreadings of Choghadiya

A common misreading assumes all 16 daily choghadiya slots are the same length. Day slots divide sunrise-to-sunset into eight equal parts and night slots divide sunset-to-next-sunrise into eight equal parts separately, so on any day except close to the equinoxes, day slots and night slots run different lengths from each other, even though each set of eight is internally equal.

A second misreading treats every 'good' slot the same way. The favourable qualities, Amrit, Shubh, Labh and Char, each carry a traditional specialty rather than one undifferentiated meaning: Char is traditionally read as suited to travel and movement, Labh to starting profitable work, and so on. Picking any favourable slot for any purpose skips that distinction.

A third misreading assumes the sequence of qualities across a day is arbitrary or the same every day. It is fixed by the ruling planet of that weekday and follows a set traditional order, the same underlying logic Rahu Kaal and Yamaganda use, which is why the pattern of favourable and unfavourable slots shifts in a predictable way from one weekday to the next.

FAQ

Questions about Choghadiya

What is Choghadiya?

Choghadiya divides daylight (sunrise to sunset) and night (sunset to next sunrise) into eight equal slots each. Every slot is graded good, bad, or neutral, so you can quickly pick a favourable window for a task without a full muhurat calculation.

How is Choghadiya different from a full muhurat?

Choghadiya gives a quick good/bad signal based only on the day and hour, it isn't enough on its own for major decisions like a wedding. Important events need the fuller calculation that combines tithi, nakshatra, weekday, and yoga.

Does Choghadiya differ by city?

Yes. The eight slots are anchored to the exact local sunrise and sunset, so the clock times for each slot shift from city to city.
