What are the eight kootas in Ashtakoota?
Each of the eight kootas measures a different facet of compatibility, from temperament and health to family harmony, and carries its own point value toward the 36-point total. The higher the combined score, the stronger the traditional compatibility reading. The eight are Varna, Vashya, Tara, Yoni, Graha Maitri, Gana, Bhakoot and Nadi.

How does rashi compatibility work?
A quick, general read on any two signs, by element and ruling planet, separate from the Ashtakoota match above. It is a useful first look, not a substitute for the full 36-guna match, which uses birth time.

What does a Guna Milan score not tell you?
A guna milan score is one layer of compatibility, not a verdict on a marriage. The eight kootas are not equal in weight, so two matches with the same total can read very differently. The score does not measure two people’s values, communication or how they will build a life together.
A single number invites a single misreading: that 18+ means "compatible" and anything below means "incompatible." Traditional Ashtakoota weighting is not that blunt. The eight kootas are not equal in importance, Nadi (8 points) and Bhakoot (7 points) are usually treated as more consequential than, say, Vashya (2 points) or Tara (3 points), so two matches with the same total score can carry very different weight depending on which kootas contributed. A 20/36 with a Nadi dosha reads very differently from a 20/36 without one.
Manglik (Mangal) dosha works the same way: it is not a flat yes-or-no label. Its severity depends on which house Mars occupies, its aspects from other planets, and its own dignity in the chart, and classical texts (including Jataka Parijata) list cancellation conditions under which a placement stops counting as a dosha at all. A report that just says "Manglik: yes" without checking these gives a shallower reading than the tradition itself calls for.
Guna Milan is also one layer of compatibility, not a verdict on a marriage. It measures a specific, traditional set of astronomical and temperamental factors between two birth charts. It does not measure two people's values, communication, or how they will actually build a life together.
