How to read your result

  • Your ascendant is the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at birth. It is your first house.
  • The ascendant lord is the planet that rules that sign. Its placement in your chart is read separately.
  • Degrees show where the ascendant falls inside the sign. Close to a sign boundary, a few minutes of birth-time difference can change the sign.

What is the ascendant (lagna)?

Your ascendant is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment you were born. It sets your first house, and every one of the other eleven houses is counted from it.

Unlike your sun sign or moon sign, the ascendant changes roughly every two hours as the earth rotates on its axis. That's why an accurate birth time matters so much here. Date of birth alone is not enough.

A reading starts at the ascendant: by tradition, personality, physical build and overall life direction are read from it.

Common misreadings of an ascendant

A common mix-up is treating the ascendant as the same thing as a sun sign or moon sign. All three are different points: the sun sign comes from the birth month (Western astrology's main sign), the moon sign comes from the Moon's position at birth time (the basis for Vedic rashifal), and the ascendant is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at birth time (the basis for all house counting). Swapping one for another changes the entire chart's interpretation.

A second misreading judges personality from the ascendant sign alone, like 'Aries ascendant means an aggressive temperament.' A real reading also weighs where the ascendant's ruling planet sits (sign and house), what aspects it receives, and whether any planet sits in the ascendant itself. The sign by itself is a starting signal, not the whole story.

A third, practical misreading: since the ascendant changes roughly every two hours, an approximate or uncertain birth time (like 'sometime in the morning') can genuinely put the wrong sign on the ascendant, even with the correct date. If the family only remembers a rough time, treat the result as a starting signal rather than a final answer, and check the hospital birth certificate where possible.

FAQ

Questions about your ascendant

Why does the ascendant need such an exact birth time? +

The ascendant shifts to a new sign roughly every two hours because it tracks the earth's rotation, not a planet's motion. Even a few minutes' difference in birth time can shift the exact degree, and sometimes the sign itself.

What is the difference between the ascendant and the moon sign? +

The ascendant is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at birth, and it anchors every house in the chart. The moon sign reflects the mind and emotions, and changes every two and a half days. They are separate calculations with separate roles in the chart.

What if I don't know my exact birth time? +

Check your birth certificate or hospital records for the recorded time. An approximate time can still give a result, but it may land on the wrong sign if you were born close to a sign change. Use the most accurate time you can for a reliable reading.
