What is Karana?

Karana is the fifth limb of panchang. Each tithi is made of two karanas, so one karana is half a tithi. A lunar month of 30 tithis therefore contains 60 karanas.

There are eleven karanas: four fixed (Shakuni, Chatushpada, Naga, Kimstughna — these each appear once around the new-moon transition each month) and seven movable (Bava, Balava, Kaulava, Taitila, Gara, Vanija, Vishti/Bhadra — these cycle through the rest of the month).

Vishti karana (Bhadra) is the one classically flagged for avoiding new work; it has its own calendar below.

FAQ

Questions about karana

What is the difference between karana and tithi?

A tithi measures the full lunar day (12° Moon-Sun elongation); a karana is half of that (6°). So most calendar days see two different karanas roll past.

What is avoided during Vishti (Bhadra) karana?

Tradition avoids starting travel, wedding muhurats and house-warmings during Bhadra. Everyday work is not treated as restricted. Open `/bhadra` for the next 14 days of Bhadra windows.

What does "movable" vs "fixed" karana mean?

The seven movable karanas (Bava, Balava, Kaulava, Taitila, Gara, Vanija, Vishti) cycle repeatedly through the lunar month. The four fixed karanas (Shakuni, Chatushpada, Naga, Kimstughna) each appear once around Amavasya.

What role does karana play in picking a muhurat?

A muhurat is fixed by weighing all five limbs together. The main karana rule is avoiding Vishti (Bhadra); the other movable karanas are generally treated as neutral.
