What is a Nakshatra?

A nakshatra is one of 27 equal divisions of the Moon's orbit, each spanning 13°20'. Every nakshatra has its own ruling planet, gana (temperament), nadi, symbol and deity. The Moon transits through roughly one nakshatra per day, which is why today's nakshatra is a key limb of the daily panchang.

Why today's nakshatra matters

The nakshatra is the part of the panchang people check most when picking a muhurat, deciding on a fast or starting something new. For example, Rohini, Mrigashira and Pushya are considered favourable for auspicious activities, while Bharani and Ashlesha call for caution.

Common misreadings of today's nakshatra

The most common misreading confuses 'today's nakshatra' with 'my nakshatra.' This page shows the transiting Moon's current nakshatra, the same for everyone on a given day and changing roughly daily. Your personal birth nakshatra (janma nakshatra) is a completely different, fixed-for-life value, set by where the Moon sat at your own exact birth moment, not by today's date.

A second misreading assumes one nakshatra label applies to the whole calendar day. Like tithi, the Moon actually changes nakshatra at a specific clock time, not at midnight, so a single calendar day can genuinely span two nakshatras depending on when the transition happens. A panchang date always names the nakshatra active at a defined reference point (commonly sunrise), not a blanket label for all 24 hours.

A third misreading treats a nakshatra's 'favourable' or 'caution' label as decisive on its own. Muhurat selection traditionally weighs all five limbs of the panchang together, tithi, vara, nakshatra, yoga and karana, not nakshatra in isolation; a generally favourable nakshatra can still fall on a day with an unfavourable tithi or yoga.

FAQ

Questions about today's nakshatra

Does today's nakshatra differ by city? +

The exact moment a nakshatra changes depends on latitude, longitude and time zone. So Mumbai, Delhi and London can see the nakshatra change at slightly different local times on the same calendar day.

What does today's nakshatra tell you? +

Today's nakshatra shows which of the 27 lunar mansions the Moon currently occupies. It is the basis for picking a muhurat, reading the panchang, and daily astrological analysis.

How often does the nakshatra change? +

The Moon crosses roughly one nakshatra per day (about every 24 hours). Occasionally two nakshatras fall on the same calendar day because the Moon's speed varies slightly.

What is the difference between birth nakshatra and today's nakshatra? +

Your birth (janma) nakshatra, the Moon's position at the moment you were born, stays fixed for life. Today's nakshatra changes daily. Matching the two (Tara Bala) is used in muhurat and compatibility analysis.
