In the Vedic naming tradition, a child's name begins with the classical syllable assigned to the birth nakshatra's pada. Each of the 27 nakshatras contains 4 padas, giving 108 padas and 108 classical syllables in total (Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Ch. 3). The Moon traverses one nakshatra (13°20′ of arc) in roughly 24 hours, so an accurate birth time is essential to fix the correct pada and syllable. Nakshara computes the lunar position using sidereal astronomy with the Lahiri ayanamsa (India Calendar Reform Committee, 1955).
