Why the birth city matters

Same birth time, two different charts

Read as Indian time

A Leicester birth at 14:30 in July, worked out as if the clock showed IST, starts from the wrong moment.

Read in the birth city

We turn 14:30 into the real moment using Leicester's clock that year, British Summer Time included, and build the chart from there.

Why it matters

Does summer time change a birth chart?

Yes, it can. Your lagna changes roughly every two hours, so the clock time on your birth certificate has to be placed correctly. In the UK or the US that clock may have been running an hour ahead of standard time. We apply the summer-time rule that was in force in your birth city that year.

When clocks ran ahead at birth

United States
For births from 1987 to 2006, summer time ran from the first Sunday in April to the last Sunday in October in most of the country. From 2007 it runs from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November.
United Kingdom
Summer time runs from late March to late October. From February 1968 to October 1971 the clocks stayed one hour ahead of GMT all year.

Dates differ by country and year, so we look them up per birth city instead of applying one rule.

What do kundli, lagna, nakshatra and ayanamsa mean?

Kundli
A kundli, also called a janam kundli or birth chart, is a map of where the Sun, Moon and planets stood at your exact birth time and place. Read the full guide: Kundli

Lagna, the ascendant, is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at birth. It changes roughly every two hours, which is why birth time matters. Read the full guide: Lagna

Was summer time in effect when I was born? +

It depends on the country and the year. For births from 1987 to 2006, summer time ran from the first Sunday in April to the last Sunday in October in most of the country. From 2007 it runs from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November. Summer time runs from late March to late October. From February 1968 to October 1971 the clocks stayed one hour ahead of GMT all year. The exact dates differ by country and year, so we look them up for your birth city and year instead of applying one rule.

How do you handle my birthplace? +

You pick your birth city from a city-level search. We apply the clock rules that were in force there on your birth date. The same clock time in London and in Delhi gives a different lagna, so the place matters as much as the hour.

Do I need my exact birth time? +

The lagna moves into a new sign roughly every two hours, and every house follows it, so a few minutes can matter when the time sits near a sign boundary. Use the time printed on your birth certificate. If it came from a US hospital, check whether it is written on a 12-hour or 24-hour clock.

Is my chart made for me? +

Your chart is made for your exact birth date, time and city, and read the Vedic way. Positions are sidereal, using the Lahiri ayanamsa. Your free chart and every paid report start from the same chart.

What do I get after I pay, and how fast? +

A PDF report, sent to your email, usually within minutes. The standard kundli matching report can also be delivered on WhatsApp. The free birth chart needs no payment and no signup.

Can I get a refund? +

Yes, in the cases our Refund Policy lists: no report reached you within 24 hours and we still cannot deliver it after you contact us, a duplicate charge, an amount different from the price shown at checkout, or an unauthorised charge. Outside those, a report you are materially unhappy with can be reviewed within 3 days of delivery.

Do you sell gemstones, pujas or rings? +

No. We never sell gemstones, pujas or rings. You pay once for a report, and the report describes your chart without telling you what to buy.
