What is Varshphal (a solar return)?
Varshphal is an annual chart cast for the exact moment the Sun returns to the same sidereal degree it occupied at birth, close to each birthday. It's a centuries-old Tajika astrology technique used to read the year's overall tone.
Like a birth chart, a Varshphal chart has its own ascendant and all nine planets, except these positions are for the solar-return instant of that particular year, not the moment of birth.
Muntha is an additional point, not a planet, that is derived mathematically: it advances one zodiac sign from the natal ascendant for every completed year of age. That is why at the very first solar return (age one), Muntha sits exactly on the natal ascendant.
Common misreadings of Varshphal
A common misreading treats Varshphal as the same system as Western 'solar return' astrology, since both cast a chart for the moment the Sun returns to its natal position. The calculation moment is similar, but the reading rules are not: Varshphal layers in Tajika-specific tools Western solar-return charts don't use, such as the Varshesh (a year-lord chosen from five candidate planets by a specific strength test) and Sahams (calculated sensitive points, distinct from Arabic Parts despite a similar idea). Applying one system's rules to the other's chart produces a different, non-equivalent result.
A second misreading assumes the Varshphal year starts at midnight on the birthday. It actually starts at the precise solar-return instant, the moment the Sun reaches the exact sidereal degree it held at birth, which can fall a day before or after the calendar birthday depending on the year, and at any hour.
A third misreading treats a difficult-looking Varshphal as a permanent verdict. It reads one specific year, layered on top of the birth chart, not a replacement for it. A weak Varshphal ascendant lord doesn't override a strong natal chart's lifetime significations, and next year's solar return starts the reading over from a fresh chart.

FAQ
Questions about Varshphal
How is Varshphal different from a birth chart? +
A birth chart stays fixed for life, cast for the exact moment of birth. Varshphal changes every year, cast for that year's solar-return instant, and reflects the tone of just that one year.
What does Muntha show? +
The house Muntha falls in within the Varshphal chart gives an early read on that year's general character. The strength and placement of Muntha's ruling planet is read alongside it.
Does Varshphal need an exact birth time? +
Yes. Like the natal ascendant, the Varshphal ascendant is very time-sensitive, since it also depends on the earth's rotation. The more accurate the birth time, the more accurate the Varshphal.
Is this Varshphal calculator free? +
Yes, completely free. Generate the Varshphal for any year at no cost.
