What is Kaal Sarp Dosh?
Kaal Sarp Dosh forms when all seven other grahas (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn) sit within one semicircle bounded by Rahu and Ketu, meaning no planet falls outside the Rahu-Ketu axis.
Twelve variants are traditionally named based on which house Rahu occupies (Ananta, Kulika, Vasuki, and so on), each with its own classical description.
Kaal Sarp Dosh is not automatically good or bad on its own. What it means depends on Rahu/Ketu's own placement, the strength of the other planets, and the rest of the chart. This calculator only checks whether the geometric condition (all planets within one semicircle) is met, not a prediction.
Common misreadings of Kaal Sarp Dosh
A common misreading treats Kaal Sarp Dosh as an exotic, rare affliction only a few charts have. Whether all seven other planets fall within the Rahu-Ketu axis is a purely geometric condition, and because Rahu and Ketu sit exactly opposite each other, roughly half of all possible planetary arrangements satisfy it to some degree. It shows up often enough that its presence alone, without reading the rest of the chart, says little.
A second misreading assumes the condition is 'mostly' met if six of the seven planets fall within the axis and one sits just outside it. The classical definition is binary on geometry: even a single planet crossing to the other side means the full Kaal Sarp condition isn't formed, whatever that one planet's own strength or placement turns out to mean separately.
A third misreading conflates the natal Kaal Sarp Dosh (fixed for life, present or absent in the birth chart) with a temporary Rahu-Ketu transit or dasha period. A person without Kaal Sarp Dosh in their birth chart can still go through a Rahu or Ketu Mahadasha or a difficult Rahu-Ketu transit; that is a separate, time-bound effect, not the same natal yoga described here.
