Planning an NRI Wedding: Matching, Muhurat and Logistics Abroad

If the wedding is in India while you live abroad, or you're planning a Hindu ceremony in your own city, the questions are the same: does the match work across two continents, what's a good date, and how do you run the ceremony when half the guest list is in a different time zone. This page collects what we've written on each, plus the tools for exact dates and matching.

The short window between Devuthani and Kharmas

Wedding season in the Hindu calendar opens after Devuthani Ekadashi (when Chaturmas ends) and closes again once Kharmas begins in mid-December, reopening in mid-January. For NRIs planning the trip home, that means the popular late-November-to-mid-December window is genuinely short, and it collides with the same weeks many families are already flying back for the winter break. Book flexible travel and hold your leave request against the season, then narrow to an exact date once kundli matching and muhurat are done.

Matching across two countries

The kundli matching tool takes each person’s own birth city independently, so a match between partners on different continents works exactly like a match between two Indian cities, verified birthplace charts and all.

FAQ

Questions NRIs ask about planning a wedding

Do both partners need to be in the same country to get a kundli match? +

No. Each partner's birth details, including their birth city, are entered independently, so a match works the same way whether both partners live in India or on different continents.

When can we lock in the exact wedding date? +

Only after kundli matching and a personalized muhurat check, both of which need both partners’ actual birth details. The season windows on this page are a planning filter for flights and leave, not the final date.

Does a destination wedding change the muhurat? +

The muhurat itself doesn't shift to suit a venue's convenience, though the exact local time it falls at does depend on the venue's time zone. The venue changes logistics, not the underlying astrological date.

Can we do both a Vedic ceremony and a civil or church ceremony? +

Yes, families commonly run both. The Vedic muhurat governs the traditional ceremony; the civil or church requirements are scheduled separately around it.
