What the day marks
The day honours Goddess Saraswati and the arrival of spring. Those connected to learning, music and the arts mark it especially, with yellow clothing and yellow-hued food as the day’s tradition. In many parts of North India, this is the day that officially kicks off the spring season, even if the weather hasn’t quite caught up yet.
Why yellow?
Yellow isn’t arbitrary. It represents the mustard fields that bloom across North India around this time, turning entire landscapes golden. Yellow also symbolizes knowledge and learning in the Saraswati tradition. Families wear yellow clothes, prepare yellow rice or kesar kheer, and decorate the puja space with yellow flowers, usually marigolds or champa. If you’re in the UK or Canada in February and mustard fields aren’t exactly in bloom outside your window, a small bowl of kesar rice and a yellow dupatta on the murti does the job.
The student connection
Vasant Panchami is one of the most important days in the academic calendar for Hindu families. Young children are often introduced to writing for the first time on this day, a ceremony called Vidyarambh or Aksharabhyasam. The parent or priest guides the child’s hand to write “Om” or the first letter of their name on a slate or in a plate of rice. Even if your child is already in school, placing their books and instruments near the Saraswati murti during the puja is the common practice.
For students preparing for board exams or competitive entrance tests, this day carries extra weight. Many families do a separate puja of the child’s study materials. It’s a real tradition, not just superstition. The psychological effect of dedicating your tools to focused purpose, even symbolically, isn’t nothing.
Regional variations
In West Bengal, this day is massive. Saraswati Puja in Kolkata rivals Durga Puja in enthusiasm if not in scale. Students and institutions build elaborate pandals, dress in yellow, and the immersion processions on the following day are a citywide event. In South India, the equivalent falls during Navaratri as Saraswati Puja on Maha Navami, so Vasant Panchami is a quieter affair there. In Gujarat and Rajasthan, the day also marks the start of preparations for Holi, which is about 40 days away.
The astrological significance
Vasant Panchami also traditionally marks the point when the Sun has moved well into Aquarius (Kumbh Rashi) and the days are noticeably getting longer. In the panchang system, the energy is shifting from the inward, cold Magha month toward the outward blossoming of Falgun. Astrologers consider this a favourable day for beginning new studies, joining a course, or starting a creative project. If you’ve been putting off enrolling in something or picking up an instrument, this is the day the traditional calendar would nudge you to start.
When the puja is done
The puja is done in the morning during Panchami tithi; there’s no specific pradosh-style window for this one. Any time between sunrise and midday while the Panchami tithi is active works. If you’re in a US time zone and the tithi ends early in the morning local time, do the puja the evening before while the tithi is still running.
