Mangala Gauri Vrat is observed every Tuesday of the Sawan month. It’s kept mainly by married women in North and West India for their husband’s long life and marital happiness. The vrat carries special significance during a newly married woman’s first Sawan, when her mayka (parents’ home) sends gifts, sweets, and suhag items, a tradition called “sindhara” or “sindhara bhejana” in many communities.
Why the dates differ between North and South
This catches people off guard every year. The Sawan month has different start and end dates depending on whether your region follows the Purnimanta or Amanta calendar. Same month name, different date ranges, different Tuesdays.
North India (Purnimanta calendar)
In 2026, Sawan month runs July 30 to August 28. Mangala Gauri Vrat dates during this period:
- August 4 (first Tuesday)
- August 11 (second Tuesday, also Sawan Shivratri this year)
- August 18 (third Tuesday)
- August 25 (fourth Tuesday)
The second Tuesday coinciding with Sawan Shivratri is worth noting. Women observing both Mangala Gauri Vrat and the Shivratri fast will effectively be doing a double-observance day: Gauri puja during the daytime and Shiva’s four-prahar puja through the night.
South and West India (Amanta calendar)
Under the Amanta calendar followed in Gujarat, Maharashtra, and South India, Shravan month runs August 13 to September 11. Mangala Gauri Vrat dates accordingly:
- August 18, 25
- September 1, 8
In Maharashtra, Mangala Gauri is observed with particular fervor. Newly married women visit the Gauri temple with their friends and family, and the puja often includes singing traditional Mangala Gauri songs specific to the region.
Puja vidhi
On the vrat day, Maa Gauri and Lord Shiva are worshipped together. Here’s a typical sequence:
- Wake early, bathe, and wear red or green (suhag colors).
- Set up Gauri and Shiva’s image or murti on a chowki with a red cloth.
- Offer suhag items: sindoor, bangles, mehendi, bindi, alta, a comb, and a mirror.
- Offer red flowers, fruits, and sweets (especially ghevar in Rajasthan, or puranpoli in Maharashtra).
- Read or listen to the Mangala Gauri Vrat Katha.
- Tie the vrat’s thread (mauli) on your wrist.
- Break the fast in the evening after the puja concludes.
The katha is central to the observance. It tells the story of a devoted wife whose steadfast faith in Gauri saved her husband’s life. Different regions have slightly different versions, but the core message is the same.
For newly married women
If this is your first Sawan after marriage, your mayka traditionally sends a sindhara, a package containing suhag items, sweets, fruits, clothes, and bangles. In return, the sasural (in-laws’ home) prepares a special meal and the new bride observes all four Tuesdays. This exchange strengthens the bond between the two families and is one of those traditions that many diaspora families work hard to maintain, even across continents.
