The 3-card spread is tarot’s most popular and easiest layout, especially for beginners just past the basics of the deck.

What the three positions mean

The first card represents the past, what has already happened and is still shaping things. The second card is the present, where things stand right now. The third card points to the future, the direction things are heading if the current path continues.

Read the cards together

Don’t read the three cards in isolation. Read them as one story: how the past shaped the present, and how the present is carrying things toward the future.

When to use it

For a question that isn’t too large or complicated, like “how will my work look this week”, a 3-card spread is usually enough. For bigger, more tangled questions, the Celtic Cross works better.

Try it now

Head to the tarot reading page, choose the “3-Card Spread”, and draw your cards.
